chartcamel Make a chart

Accessibility

Last updated: 30 October 2026. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, on the site and in the chart maker.

Charts you make here

  • Every chart gets an alt text sentence written from the data: the chart type, what it covers and the main figures. Copy it from the explanation panel and use it wherever you place the image.
  • The data table under the chart is the same numbers as an HTML table with row and column headers. Paste it next to the chart when you embed or publish it.
  • Two of the palettes, Okabe-Ito and Tol bright, are designed to be told apart by people with red-green or blue-yellow color blindness. They are marked "color-blind safe" in the maker. In single-series bar charts, the highlighted bar is also the one the explanation names, so the information isn't carried by color alone.
  • Numbers can be printed on the bars and points, so values don't have to be read off the axis.

The site and the maker

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone: visible focus outlines, a "Skip to content" link, a menu button that announces whether it's open.
  • Every control in the maker has a label. The chart type and palette pickers are groups of toggle buttons that report their pressed state.
  • The explanation panel is a live region, so a screen reader announces the new summary when the data or chart type changes.
  • Text and background colors meet AA contrast. Pages reflow at 400% zoom and on screens 320 pixels wide without sideways scrolling.
  • Files can be added with a button as well as by dragging.

What we know isn't perfect

  • The chart preview is one SVG image with an alt attribute; its individual bars and points aren't announced. The table and explanation carry the same information.
  • A downloaded PNG has no alt text of its own; add the sentence from the panel where you use it.
  • The "Camel" and "Dusk" palettes are not color-blind safe. The maker says which are.
